I have been wanting to get into more mecha recently. I don’t have twitter or facebook anymore, but I suddenly remembered I have a website for a bunch of people who might be fans of mech.
We (partner and I) recently rewatched Big O and really enjoyed the aesthetic. I also really liked G Gundam, I watched it ironically at first but now I have a Raine figrue for my girlie pop shelf. I do not like Gundam Wing and I cannot take it seriously (I tried dub and sub and I end up MSTK-ing it). Code Geass is OK, but I do not like le louch as a protag. I have always liked Xeno, evangelion, gurren lagan.
I want to write a project that is Mecha adjacent, so I’d love to get a variety of recs and flavors and eras, etc.
Looking forward to hearing your comments.
We are watching Escaflowne.
I am loving it. My husband watched the dub and apparently it was advertised to boys in english back in the day. I need to watch a video essay on this.
Very much enjoy the medieval/steampunk mecha and art style. The art is beautiful. The shojo romance aspect is great too. 9/10 so far.
I have an eternal bias for Big O since that was my first mecha anime.
Lelouch…yeah. He’s not for everyone. I like him, but also sometimes I wanna chuck him like a javelin.
Current backlog consists of: Code Geass, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Yatterman (both the original ‘77 anime and the 2008 revival), Xabungle, the entirety of Neon Genesis Evangelion up to and including the new movies, Votoms, New Getter Robo, Eureka Seven, Daitarn 3, Tetsujin 28’s 2004 anime, Shin Mazinger Z Chapter, and Iron Leaguer for mecha or mecha-adjacent. Does Cowboy Bebop count? It was in a Super Robot Wars game, in my defense…
I think out of all these, right now I’d definitely recommend Shin Mazinger Z. It does have kind of a slow start, but once it gets going, it really gets going. Also I love Tsubasa Nishikiori, the mentor to the protag.
