I remember finding this website when trying to reduce the time i spent on platforms like twitter and discord. Now every time I’m in a period where i have a lot to do (like the time before my university exams) I come here during my breaks. It gives me a place to talk to people without the algorithm keeping me there for hours. I like this about this website and was wondering what keeps you guys here?

I’ve only just joined but I thought I might as well chime in here!
Surely there’s a bit of nostalgia attached to the format of forums, but I also think it’s one of the better mediums for focused discussion on the internet. Stuff like Twitter or Discord can get really hard to sort through or keep track of if you’re not present at the time of discussion. I also really enjoy the feeling of community on forums and the way you start to recognize regular posters and their pfps, signatures, etc.

I haven’t been around for a while, but I like that longer-form posting spaces let me slow down a little bit to reflect on what I want to say before I just blurt it out. Years of existing online in spaces where everything is instant have reduced my own attention span by a lot, but I still really hope they stick around.

Lately I’ve been burning out on Discord and Reddit.
On Reddit, every submission is pandering for attention which affects the quality of discussions on there. Its a great place for finding answers to quick questions, but its not really a place for developing a community. I’ve been using it for 10 years or so and I do not remember more than a handful of users; its all one big faceless crowd.
Discord is fun and has a forum-meets-IRC feel to it. My issue with it is that interesting discussions eventually get drowned out and if you’re not there at that moment you miss it entirely. I want to have some degree of control about which topics I engage it and which ones I ignore, which is exactly what you get on forums.
Also I’m just a bit nostalgic for forums at the moment. I miss when the internet wasn’t so centralized. I’d rather be a part of a smaller community with users I can actually remember.
